Summer update: NY Visiting Family

(2)

Category : Travel

Well, after another couple of months of post-LSAT fun living it up in Oregon and Huntington Beach, CA we are currently in a little place called Binghamton, NY. Before I get started about Binghamton let’s get caught up with our time in California.

After bringing Paige up to Oregon where we went on our excursions getting the best of North Bend and hanging out at the lake, we headed back to California where we entertained Paige’s cousins and extended family from her mom, Cynthia’s side of the family.

June Fun

It was awesome meeting Todd and Connie, (Cynthia’s brother and sister) as well as all of their children, Kyle, Alex, Anna, and Jimmy. Anna also brought her friend, Jennifer, who was nice to meet. We got a chance to hang out at the beach a lot at Crystal Cove, and the Huntington Pier.

We also got a chance to play a lot of volleyball and beach soccer. Both Kyle and Alex play soccer in high school. Overall it was a great time and my game, Aggravation, which has been in the family for many years kept us all entertained. Other than that it was other games like Risk and the card game ‘Oh Hell’.

Once they left Paige and I had a chance to focus on securing our wedding venue. After beginning to lose hope, we stumbled across this amazing place after Paige convinced me to drive down near San Diego to check out Condor’s Nest Ranch.

Condor's Nest Ranch

This place is awesome. As much as I would like to elaborate, however, just check out their site and I will write more a bout it later. I have a lot to cover today.

Dutch Day

Next thing, Paige’s best friends from high school, Jordan and Amanda, came to visit us in Huntington Beach. We picked them up from the airport and we all had a great time together. We had ANOTHER long day at the beach where my Dutch friend, Sjoerd, three of his friends met up with us while traveling down the west coast. What a great time! Those guys were awesome and the day went by really fast. I hadn’t seen Sjoerd in two years since I was living in Costa Rica.

Dutch Day

Later, the girls and I took a little day trip up to Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Korea town in Los Angeles. They did a little window shopping and we ran the gauntlet at Venice beach trying to keep all the guys from hitting on the girls. For dinner we ate at an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue  restaurant called “Manna” which was amazingly very authentic. We all loved it.

The last day we took it easy and I played in a soccer game with a Latino team who I played with once before. It was a good time, having won the game, and I also scored a nice goal early on. Somehow, though, from a header I hurt my neck from some kind of muscle spasm and for this last week my neck and upper back has been really killing me.

Paige is feeling great now having chosen our wedding venue and now we are focusing our efforts on booking the photographer (which is proving to be VERY expensive). We have a few in mind and are excited about it. The official wedding date is August 6th, 2011. It will be right before I am scheduled to start attending law school. Oh, and on that note, I officially have everything ready for my law school applications except for my written personal statement. I was excited to get my last letter of recommendation in TODAY. The other day I got my transcripts from SOCC, the Community College where I have about 7 credits (not exactly meaningful but required none the less).

Binghamton

Monday night we left for Binghamton, NY to visit Paul’s side of the family. We flew in on the red-eye flight and with my neck injury I slept a total of 0 minutes to arrive to Binghamton 9 hours later without our suitcases. But the next day we got our bags and got comfortable. The last few days were spent just hangin out in this economically depress city, but without the depressed feeling being surrounded by family. Paul’s mother and father are both wonderful people. I am slowly learning how the complicated relationships fit together and have been delighted by the presence of all parties. Paul’s father’s (Paul) girlfriend, Joan, as well as Paul’s mother’s (Jeanne) husband, Charlie are both great.

Binghamton

We spent the day yesterday at a lake doing some swimming at sat near the bonfire with Jeanne and Charlie and Paul’s half-brother, Brian and his family. The little kids tend to follow me around a lot which is often annoying, but fun as they keep things interesting. We had a great time taking pictures of our sparkler art work by the fire.

Binghamton

We have a lot going on soon. Today we are going to the Annual Spiedie Fest. Read up on Spiedies to find out how important they are in this area. I am excited. Tomorrow is a best ball golf tournament for a pancreatic cancer research fundraiser. Then, Sunday we will be running in a 5K race (not sure the cause).

Wow! That’s a lot. Keep tuned in and I will follow up on all this stuff.

Love to hear your comments!

Hey everyone! I haven’t forgot TOTALLY about blogging. I am going to do my best as soon as we return from the USA to catch everything up from where I left off.

It’s been such a long time (well, seems like it) and so much has happened since I wrote. I just wanted to tell all of those who we visited while in the USA thank you so much for all of your hospitality and great times. Paige and I really couldn’t have asked for better company, activities, and just good nature in general. Things were really busy, but we did the best we could to make everything happen. To those who don’t live in the places we visited, I really hope that we can stop in sometime in the future when we are finished here.

I will wrap things up now, cause I am here in Huntington Beach now with Paige’s family and we are about to barbecue some meat for dinner. The weather is beautiful and we just spent the afternoon playin around in their neighbor’s pool with a waterfall and slide and everything.

We’ll miss you!! Thanks!

Kyle

Hey everyone! It’s been a while but for good reason. Wow, I had such an awesome time at home it was hard to come back. I got to see all my friends an family, watched my cousin get married to an awesome guy, and overall just had a nice time.

Being back so far, three days, has been different than I had expected. When I got in I got to sleep on the plane so I was more awake than I thought. Just being back in the country put me in a new place. I still have a different outlook and perspective now that I have been back to visit home. I’m not really sure if it’s something permanent or if it’s just gonna wear off like anything else.

I think I feel more comfortable, however, a little depressed that I am again not with friends or family. Paige is usually with me here as well and she isn’t back here yet. That has been real weird to be honest. I guess its good in a way but it makes me feel a lot different about my life here. We had always spent so much time together when here and it may be the reason I feel different. Either way, she is coming back soon and then we are taking right off to Hong Kong for three days, and Vietnam and Thailand after that.

I feel like there is so much for me to do but it’s hard to find the energy or motivation necessary to do most of it. I don’t feel social either. I did, however, get out yesterday and play some screen golf and eat out with my friend Jason and Allistair. I had a good time. I also decided to hold off on the alcohol for maybe a couple weeks.

Generally, I like the new little change around here. It really puts things like our way of thought into perspective. I really should go out and see some more people. Maybe today will be my real successful day. Who knows. I’ve gotta set more stuff up for our trip like things to do in Hong Kong, our route in Vietnam and Thailand, and some specific adventures we’d like to take.

It’s a good thing I took a look at Hong Kong yesterday cause I found out that it’s way expensive and booked the cheapest hostel I could find. It was still 40 bucks for two. That’s crazy. Usually they are much cheaper. However, I think it’s still good we are visiting there. It will be more developed and intimidating than probably any place I have ever been. Soon after we will be in Vietnam where things are going to be much different. We can save some cash there or live like royalty, either way works for me.

Well, this is getting really long, so I will leave you with this: I had an amazing time at home. I will continue to write in the blog and give you all my perspective of my time here. I had some requests (thanks Aunt Linda) to be more descriptive on just everyday things so I will do more of that. I want to thank all of you who let me bum you cellphones and give me rides here and there (Mom, Kels, Josh, Ian, Zach, Rick…).

Wow, well here’s to a brand new year. Hold on to your resolutions this time. I decided to brush my teeth and floss every night before I go to bed. I was never good about that. I was a morning only brusher.

Love you all!

Talk soon!

Home sweet HOME!

Well, the only thing missing thus far is Paige. :) But she is happy at home as well.

Wow, culture shock. I spent my first day with my best friend, Zach and his wife, Sierra in Federal Way. It was like 6:45 AM when I got in and I was so excited to be home I made it until like 12 PM after a little exercise which was much needed. Then I slept for like 4 hours and my other best friend, Ian came over and we got some food. We spent the evening at a local bar with older people there. We just played darts and pool and walked back being hooligans on the way tackling each other and just havin fun.

Next day we got up and got some Pho at a restaurant owned by Koreans. My third best friend, Jon came down with his girlfriend to meet us. Believe it or not we ate Kimchi there! It was fun speaking the little Korean I know to them. Then it was off to Seattle which was awesome. The city is like exactly what I needed, full of Christmas spirit. Everywhere you looked in the city was Christmas. It was quite a change from the lack of decor in Gimhae where hardly anyone takes Christmas half as seriously as we do.

So I am walkin around downtown with Jon and Ian and it’s the best feeling ever. We did some window shopping and people watching and then headed to Bellevue to see Kelsey. We went to the Bellevue Square mall and did more of nothing and it was bliss. Got some groceries and with all the craziness (snow) it was quite a journey to her place. Just seeing everything covered in snow was awesome. There’s a strange excitement that comes with this crazy weather. I felt like a little kid because I was so happy.

We got here and drank some soju and had an evening with Kelsey and her boyfriend, Josh. Did some sledding and talked a lot. It was a nice night.

Now we are snowed in. The weather is just too much to come home today. We did get some chains that fit Kelsey’s car though. Tomorrow will be rough I suppose, so now I am concentrating on enjoying life again. I plan to play out in the snow like a kid again and throw snowballs at people. I wish my snow bunny was here.. haha.. I would throw a big snowball at her. haha.. but in a nice way..

Miss ya all still but I will be seeing you soon! most of you :( Merry Christmas!!!!
