Summer update: NY Visiting Family

(2)

Category : Travel

Well, after another couple of months of post-LSAT fun living it up in Oregon and Huntington Beach, CA we are currently in a little place called Binghamton, NY. Before I get started about Binghamton let’s get caught up with our time in California.

After bringing Paige up to Oregon where we went on our excursions getting the best of North Bend and hanging out at the lake, we headed back to California where we entertained Paige’s cousins and extended family from her mom, Cynthia’s side of the family.

June Fun

It was awesome meeting Todd and Connie, (Cynthia’s brother and sister) as well as all of their children, Kyle, Alex, Anna, and Jimmy. Anna also brought her friend, Jennifer, who was nice to meet. We got a chance to hang out at the beach a lot at Crystal Cove, and the Huntington Pier.

We also got a chance to play a lot of volleyball and beach soccer. Both Kyle and Alex play soccer in high school. Overall it was a great time and my game, Aggravation, which has been in the family for many years kept us all entertained. Other than that it was other games like Risk and the card game ‘Oh Hell’.

Once they left Paige and I had a chance to focus on securing our wedding venue. After beginning to lose hope, we stumbled across this amazing place after Paige convinced me to drive down near San Diego to check out Condor’s Nest Ranch.

Condor's Nest Ranch

This place is awesome. As much as I would like to elaborate, however, just check out their site and I will write more a bout it later. I have a lot to cover today.

Dutch Day

Next thing, Paige’s best friends from high school, Jordan and Amanda, came to visit us in Huntington Beach. We picked them up from the airport and we all had a great time together. We had ANOTHER long day at the beach where my Dutch friend, Sjoerd, three of his friends met up with us while traveling down the west coast. What a great time! Those guys were awesome and the day went by really fast. I hadn’t seen Sjoerd in two years since I was living in Costa Rica.

Dutch Day

Later, the girls and I took a little day trip up to Santa Monica, Venice Beach, and Korea town in Los Angeles. They did a little window shopping and we ran the gauntlet at Venice beach trying to keep all the guys from hitting on the girls. For dinner we ate at an all-you-can-eat Korean barbecue  restaurant called “Manna” which was amazingly very authentic. We all loved it.

The last day we took it easy and I played in a soccer game with a Latino team who I played with once before. It was a good time, having won the game, and I also scored a nice goal early on. Somehow, though, from a header I hurt my neck from some kind of muscle spasm and for this last week my neck and upper back has been really killing me.

Paige is feeling great now having chosen our wedding venue and now we are focusing our efforts on booking the photographer (which is proving to be VERY expensive). We have a few in mind and are excited about it. The official wedding date is August 6th, 2011. It will be right before I am scheduled to start attending law school. Oh, and on that note, I officially have everything ready for my law school applications except for my written personal statement. I was excited to get my last letter of recommendation in TODAY. The other day I got my transcripts from SOCC, the Community College where I have about 7 credits (not exactly meaningful but required none the less).

Binghamton

Monday night we left for Binghamton, NY to visit Paul’s side of the family. We flew in on the red-eye flight and with my neck injury I slept a total of 0 minutes to arrive to Binghamton 9 hours later without our suitcases. But the next day we got our bags and got comfortable. The last few days were spent just hangin out in this economically depress city, but without the depressed feeling being surrounded by family. Paul’s mother and father are both wonderful people. I am slowly learning how the complicated relationships fit together and have been delighted by the presence of all parties. Paul’s father’s (Paul) girlfriend, Joan, as well as Paul’s mother’s (Jeanne) husband, Charlie are both great.

Binghamton

We spent the day yesterday at a lake doing some swimming at sat near the bonfire with Jeanne and Charlie and Paul’s half-brother, Brian and his family. The little kids tend to follow me around a lot which is often annoying, but fun as they keep things interesting. We had a great time taking pictures of our sparkler art work by the fire.

Binghamton

We have a lot going on soon. Today we are going to the Annual Spiedie Fest. Read up on Spiedies to find out how important they are in this area. I am excited. Tomorrow is a best ball golf tournament for a pancreatic cancer research fundraiser. Then, Sunday we will be running in a 5K race (not sure the cause).

Wow! That’s a lot. Keep tuned in and I will follow up on all this stuff.

Love to hear your comments!

-Kyle

Hey everyone, I know it’s been a long time.. Just wanted to update on the LSAT. I got my scores back and WOW.. I don’t know what happened but I guess all the hard work has paid off. When I woke up and saw my new score I actually didn’t believe it. It was even higher than I had hoped for and ended up to be such a relief.

After putting in that much time for something and working so hard, I was struggling to find the confidence that a good score would follow. Everyone who helped me throughout the process should know that I really couldn’t have done it without their help. I really appreciate all the things you did for me.

With the new score many doors have opened and I can comfortably apply to better law schools and look to gain scholarships as well. Currently, my top schools include (geographically) University of Washington, Seattle University, Lewis and Clark, Willamette, University of Oregon, UC Davis, UCLA, and USC.

I know some of these are quite difficult to gain acceptance to, however, I plan to apply anyway and try to do my best.

Along with that note, I wanted to share the latest crop of photos I have taken while kicking off what very well could be to most fun summer of my life!

Thanks all! I will try to update again soon!

Wanna try? Go ahead. You have 8 min 45 seconds to read and complete the questions.

*Taken from the actual February 1993 LSAT

Doctor Yamata works only on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays. She performs four different activities–lecturing, operating, treating patients, and conducting research. Each working day she performs exactly one activity in the morning and exactly one activity in the afternoon. During each week her work schedule must satisfy the following restrictions:

1) She performs operations on exactly three mornings.

2) If she operates on Monday, she does not operate on Tuesday.

3) She lectures in the afternoon on exactly two consecutive calendar days.

4) She treats patients on exactly one morning and exactly three afternoons.

5) She conducts research on exactly one morning.

6) On Saturday she neither lectures nor performs operations.

Questions:

1) Which of the following must be a day on which Doctor Tamata lectures?

(A) Monday

(B) Tuesday

(C) Wednesday

(D) Friday

(E) Saturday

2) On Wednesday Doctor Yamata could be scheduled to:

(A) conduct research in the morning and operate in the afternoon

(B) lecture in the morning and treat patients in the afternoon

(C) operate in the morning and lecture in the afternoon

(D) operate in the morning and conduct research in the afternoon

(E) treat patients in the morning and treat patients in the afternoon

3) Which one of the following statements must be true?

(A) There is one day on which the doctor treats patients both in the morning and in the afternoon.

(B) The doctor conducts research on one of the days on which she lectures.

(C) The doctor conducts research on one of the days on which she treats patients.

(D) The doctor lectures on one of the days on which she treats patients.

(E) The doctor lectures on one of the days on which she operates.

4) If Doctor Yamata operates on Tuesday, then her schedule for treating patients could be

(A) Monday morning, Monday afternoon, Friday morning, Friday afternoon

(B) Monday morning, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon

(C) Monday afternoon, Wednesday morning, Wednesday afternoon, Saturday afternoon

(D) Wednesday morning, Wednesday afternoon, Friday afternoon, Saturday afternoon

(E) Wednesday afternoon, Friday afternoon, Saturday morning, Saturday afternoon.

5) Which one of the following is a pair of days on both of which Doctor Yamata must treat patients?

(A) Monday and Tuesday

(B) Monday and Saturday

(C) Tuesday and Friday

(D) Tuesday and Saturday

(E) Friday and Saturday

As you can see, these types of games are complicated. They deal with four variable sets, which calculate to have more than 20 million possibilities. However, as you do more and more of these problems you start being able to pick up on more inferences that are key to solving the questions.

The key to this problem is to figure out which tasks she performs in the morning and afternoon. You can deduce that in the mornings she treats patients on one day, conducts research on one day, and performs operations for three. For her afternoons, she treats patients on three days, and lectures on two consecutive days on Monday or Tuesday. Linking the rules so that they provide more information is essential.

By the time 8 minutes and 45 seconds was up, I was able to correctly answer only three questions because I simply didn’t write down one of the rules which was necessary for questions 3 and 4. So, I will continue to practice until I consistently set these problems up correctly.

The Blog is BACK in Town!

Category : Home, LSAT

Hey everyone! Well, the time hath come. It’s time to stop slacking off and traveling about like a vagabond without keeping ties to the blog. Welcome back to the new series of posts to keep you happy.

Well, I’ll keep this short because I rarely end up doing that. We got back to Korea and spent an amazing month just visiting our families and friends. But before we did most of that, I asked Paige to marry me. Yep, that’s right. We’re engaged. Although, I would guess most of you know that by now. If you click on the flickr fotos page you will find some pics of the engagement party and such. The pictures of the awesome engagement ring Paige and I picked out can be found by clicking here.

We had an awesome engagement party thrown by my parents in North Bend and then we took of for Washington DC to visit Paige’s brother. Had a blast sightseeing DC and New York City where we also got to meet up with old friends whom we’d met prior in our various adventures abroad.

That quickly brings me to today. Now, unfortunately, Paige and I are in different parts of the country, but only for a short while. I decided to move home for the month of May and end of April to seize the opportunity to live in a minimal distraction environment while I study 40 hrs/wk to retake the LSAT. This is actually a short break from studying right now. More on all this later on.

LSAT begins on June 7 at 12:30 PM. I think I’ll put up a countdown timer soon :)

All I want for Christmas is my LSAT Score

Category : General Life

Hi everyone! It’s been a while since the last post and I promised a new post about how the LSAT went. It goes like this:

I started out on this mission back in July when after spending time in Korea getting things together got me thinking about what I will do for the future. I had tentative plans on going to business school, but after looking into it further and talking to my best friend, Jon, who is currently in law school at Seattle University, I starting thinking that law might be something I could be good at.

Jon convinced me that with my current undergraduate degree in Economics, it was all up to how well I handled the logical part of law that would be able to tell me if it is something I would enjoy and succeed at. I am currently still at this point in my journey, but at least after months of study I still find myself enjoying the logical aspect that law brings.

After searching for options, I found out that I could take the LSAT test in Seoul, Korea and get it out of the way before I return home. I then had the amazing support of my friend, my family, and especially my girlfriend, Paige, who made me swear that I would try my best to keep on a good study track and be as prepared as I could be for the test. When I got back to Korea after a nice visit home in August I was ready to go for it.

While studying for the test, I learned more about what the real value lawyers bring to the world through applied logical reasoning, and although not everything came super easy to me I enjoyed learning the methods that first year law students learn in law school. I studied hard to practice the methods for handling the questions on the test, and finally, I went up to Seoul and took the test on Dec. 6, Mom’s birthday. Here in Korea, I also have to thank my friend, John-Henry for helping me gather some materials I needed for the studying. Also, My buddy Dr. Calvin helped to keep me motivated and also helped me find the test center (which was not easy to find).

Before I knew it, it was time to head up to Seoul. I never realized before I took the test just how anxious I was, although, I felt quite prepared. I headed up on the train on Saturday the day before and went right to the test center, a Women’s University in the city. It was really cold outside and I quickly used some broken Korean and verified I was in the right place. I asked about a motel and found one around the corner. After checking in I just got some food and hung out at a Korean “Sauna” and went back and went to sleep. “Saunas” are basically big bath houses where you can relax and use the hot tubs, steam rooms and saunas as we call them.

The morning of, I got right up and got myself some breakfast and went to the test room. FREEZING. I was hoping they would warm it up, but even after they turned on the old clinking heaters it didn’t get much warmer. After starting, some people would run out of the room to go to the bathroom literally on a sprint. I thought it was quite funny. As it turns out, I didn’t have big problems on time even though that was the number one thing I was worried about. Overall, it went pretty well. At least when I finished I was really happy to be done!

Now I remain, waiting. Although a really big part of me is hoping for a certain score, I know that whatever I get is what I have to work with. As for now, I don’t plan on retaking the test if my score is too low. Let’s just all hope that when I get the score (hopefully before Christmas) it’s something that I can be happy about! So, what I really want for Christmas is a good LSAT score. Wish me luck!

A bit of the lives of Paige and I

Hey all! Click on the pic below to link to a new album Paige put up on Facebook about bits and pieces of our lives here in Korea. Also, be on the lookout for Paige’s debut blog post and for another from me writing about my experience with taking the LSAT. As blogging was kind of a great way to procrastinate for me while studying for the test, you have seen that I haven’t been blogging as frequently now. I am now busy with getting things together personally before we head off to China for our winter vacation. Hopefully, I will be able to put at least a little more interesting stuff before we leave for China, and perhaps during the trip too!

Keeping the Chin Up

Category : General Life

Hey everyone, if you didn’t notice, it’s been a while since my last post, but for good reason. The last few days I have been doing my best to keep my life distraction free. Writing in my blog qualifies here as a distraction. I will be taking the LSAT in Seoul on Dec. 6th (also mom’s birthday) and I have been doing all the final steps I can to ensure the best score I can.

Things have been tough, however. After taking hundreds of practice questions and reading up on strategy things remain inconsistent and I have come to realize that my results will probably mostly based on none other than my confidence on the test day. I have done very well on some parts and poorly on others, and vice versa. I guess at this point I will just have to try my best and I will get what I get. Therefore, I am looking for as much confidence at this point as possible.

Thanks to all of you who have supported me through this. John Henry for the books, Dr. Cal for the support, Paige for keeping me on task, Jonny C for the advice, Mom and Dad for the support, and all my other buddies who encouraged me! Wish me luck!

Randomness

Category : General Life, Korea

Random NumbersHi Everyone, I wish there were an easy way to write small posts containing just little thoughts on the blog. There is no single topic that sticks out among the others to write about. However, there are little things worth writing about.  I’ll work on making a tiny post section in case this happens again. For now I will just bullet the things going on recently. Nothing too Exciting, but just some samples of what’s going on in my life right now. Please enjoy. Oh, if you are wondering what the picture on the left is about, I found it while searching for “random” and it came up because its apparently the results of some algorithm for generating random numbers.

Stuff worth Mentioning:

  1. Co-TeachingYesterday my Co-teacher and I put on an open lesson for any of the other teachers in the school to audit.  It was initially a surprise to hear about it last week when Ms. Park mentioned that it would happen. I wasn’t sure I would like it. Later, I came to realize that it was a really good thing for teachers to be able to see what goes on in other classes. When I teach 5th and 6th grade I teach with Ms. Park and the homeroom teachers are not present. They don’t usually see what goes on in English class. Ms. Park did an excellent job preparing and the lesson went very smoothly as the class was obviously on their best behavior.
  2. Paige and I are planning our vacation to China in January. Yes, that’s right. We plan to hit China Mapas much of China as we can see in 2-3 weeks during our vacation. Although we can’t get time off during Christmas (or afford tickets) to go to the USA, we do get from the 29th of December until the 2nd of February off for a paid vacation. Our initial plans were to go visit our friend, Ji-Hyun, in China but now we want to see Shanghai, Beijing, The Terracotta Warriors, and Yangtze River as well as visit Ji-Hyun afterward. Paige has been working very hard the last few days planning as I have been tailoring my schedule toward studying for the LSAT in December which I will cover later on. As for the plans for Bali, that really depends on if we can get a ticket cheap enough to afford. It is looking at the moment a little doubtful because they are expensive. Bali isn’t real close to Korea, so maybe we can find an alternative warm place to visit for the winter.
  3. Future Sam Bang Elementary KidWinter. Yes, winter. I know, maybe it’s only Fall still, but regardless, it totally feels like Winter. The temperature lately has been so cold it’s often difficult to even stand outside for just a few minutes to catch the bus. I went out to visit Dr. Calvin last night and even though where we were going was only two blocks away I still got dressed in three layers of jackets just for the walk. The little guy in the picture is all bundled up as well. You will be able to find my gallery of these recent pictures I took on Wednesday when the sun was shining on the school and you can see the falling leaves.
  4. Calvin got a new kitten. What? Another? Yea, the doc only has 6 animals as it is! In order Kanji and Bellato “Balance out the species” Dr. Calvin decided to get a young Siamese Kitten so the felines can stand up a little better against the Canines in Dr. Calvin’s animal house. Last night I went with him to help pick her out. An adorable adoption to the family. Hopefully Kanji will get a chance to bond more with “Bella” in the future. Kanji really needs friends. We have “home-schooled” him a little too much. Dr. Cal has wanted to get the Siamese for quite a while now and finally he did it. He loves animals and I think the cat will be very happy with him there around all the other animals.
  5. LSATLSAT. Well, the test date is approaching. As I continue studying I get a little more nervous and soon I will find myself planning my trip to Seoul on the 5-6th of December to try my luck. I say “try my luck” with a sarcastic tone because the LSAT is pretty much designed to reflect the polar opposite of luck. Many of you as about the studying process. My studying is going well, but could always be better. I realized that I really should have forked out the money to take a real class. Who knows for sure if it would have helped, but at this point it’s really hard to be my own critic and continue going having to look up all the answers myself, stumble upon the right ways to do thing, and just keep on going. Although I won’t have any sort of structured class behind me, I think that what I have done and what I am doing has really helped my understanding of not just the test but what law and Law School is all about. I enjoy argumentation and am still focused on doing the best I can on this test. Wish me luck!
  6. Kyles BlogLastly, the blog. I have also been able to spend my not so valuable time here at school continuing to blog and improve the site. Lately you readers have really put up some nice numbers for me. I am quite thrilled with all the unique visitors and returns to the site. I know that when someone comes back to read more that the content is at least worth checking out. I have been tracking the blog for just over a week now and have had literally hundreds of visits! If you have noticed, the Photo Gallery has also gone through vast improvements. I started using “Floatbox” to view images from my Flickr Page and also my site in general. In fact, it’s what is being used to view the pictures on this post when you click on them. I hope to utilize it to its fullest. It’s an extremely powerful photo viewing javascript code that lets all of you view the images on my blog in an easy and aesthetic fashion. I would like to personally thank Byron (the author of Floatbox) in helping me first-hand on my integration of this tool. Cheers Byron!
Also, I am in the process of getting Paige to help with some of the posts. She will make here debut contribution soon. Also, we are hoping to add a cool page soon about Korea and living here. It would be beneficial not only for those looking to come here, but also people interested in general things about life here as well. Hope to hear from you all!
